Azimuth Pyx Al Sumut The original name in Arabic is "Al Sumut", which means "the way" or "the direction".  It was Latinized to "Azimuth" when the Roman Empire began trade with indigenous Arabs.  It is most prominently seen over New Zealand and Australia, suggesting that Arab merchant ships may have used it for navigation in that part of the world.
